Recommendation Letter

Dear Sir or Madam,

I started to know Miss Shirley Hu when I returned from Harvard in 2000 to teach History of Chinese Political Ideology. I remembered that she was a diligent and outstanding student whose cleverness and original views I appreciated very much. That‘s why I‘m very glad to write the recommendation letter for her.

Her remarkable performance in class gave me a deep impression. Every time she sat in the first three rows. Unlike her classmates, she not only took down notes carefully, but also showed her quick response, good memory and different perspective from others on a specific historical event. What is more, she put forward bravely her own views on many problems after careful deliberation and often discussed with me after class. Though some of her view weren‘t well considered, I appreciated her independent way of thinking. Moreover, the study of the history of Chinese political ideology is integrated with related western academic history and the comparison and contrast between the two, to which Miss Shirley Hu paid attention and did try to study as more related western academic history as possible. As a result, she distinguished herself from her classmates. For her diligence and independent way of thinking, I recommended related books to her regularly. I supervised her writing thesis and followed closely her repeated progress.

During my two-year visit at Harvard, I met many excellent Chinese students to whom Miss Shirley Hu is no inferior as far as I‘m concerned. Her solid background of politics study, vast scope of reading including the related works of China and western countries are rare for an undergraduate, so I‘m pleased to see that Miss Shirley Hu has been determined to devote herself to the study of public policy.

Understanding and deliberation of the past is for better design of the future. Her understanding of the Chinese ideology will assist her to study public policy from a particular perspective. For the making of a good public policy, historical tradition and political factors have to be taken into account besides quantitative analysis. Overlooking these factors usually leads to the failure of a policy. That‘s why I‘m convinced that she will achieve success in the study of public policy in the United States, and make contributions to China‘s policy analysis.
