As I peered into the cavernous incision in the dead man's chest, I marveled at the intricate network of arteries and veins connected to his silent heart. More than sparking my interest, however, this experience engraved the patterns of organs, nerves, muscles, and bones in my mind. Gross anatomy provided one of the most memorable experiences of my first year in medical school, and dissecting a human body made me keenly aware of the vastly complex nature of my chosen profession. Thoroughly studying the strategies of the body, followed by their revelation in the gross anatomy lab, permanently cemented the knowledge of physiology in my memory. Subsequently, I employed visualization to master many different subjects, realizing that I am a visual learner and prefer to think in three dimensions.

I progressed through human physiology and pathology, and each organ system aroused my curiosity in a different way. The body is beautifully constructed, and every element efficiently fulfills its indispensable role. By the end of my second year, I was determined to pursue a field that enabled me to interact with science on a broad basis. I commenced my clinical rotations excited to discover my niche within medicine and decipher my interests and strengths. I appreciated my diverse rotations, and I learned from the unique character of each experience.

Through exposure to an endless variety of patients, I solidified my understanding of physician-patient relationships and came to recognize the value of teamwork in health care. I found immense fulfillment in observing firsthand the treatments that various medical teams offered to patients. What particularly intrigued me among the multiple layers of patient care, however, was the power of diagnosis. I profoundly enjoyed the mental challenge of piecing together fragments of history, physical exams, labs, and imaging studies to decipher the cause of an illness.

Progressing through my clinical rotations, I became increasingly conscious of the central role of radiological studies in making a diagnosis. I eagerly anticipated my daily trip to the reading room, accompanied my patients to radiology whenever possible, and thoroughly discussed the studies with the supervising physician. To investigate the field and acquaint myself with new developments, I subscribed to the Radiological Society of North America and the journals of Radiology and Radio Graphics. Impressed by the power, capabilities, and utility of X-ray, Ultrasound, CT, and MRI studies in diagnostics, I also appreciate the vast amount of knowledge required to become a proficient radiologist.

I learned about the applied aspects of biomedical science by observing the role of clinical work in alleviating illness and restoring confidence to patients, but I also recognized that modern medicine is still lacking. To familiarize myself with the techniques used to advance medical knowledge, I began working in the human islet program of a local diabetes research laboratory. This job has proved tremendously rewarding, and I have received nothing but warmth, understanding, and an intense urge to teach from my mentors. Research has deepened my understanding of disease and demonstrated the importance of precision and teamwork. My commitment to research has earned me co-authorship of eight published papers, and I now see clinical medicine and research as inseparable. I plan to integrate my interests in the future, applying insights gained from both aspects of medicine to heal and help.

My decision to pursue a specialty in diagnostic radiology is the culmination of long analysis of my medical skills and personality. My dedication to precision and teamwork, along with my interest in dealing with the broad spectrum of human illness through the unique perspective of imaging modalities, will make me a superb radiologist. By piecing together my interests and strengths -- much like arriving at a diagnosis -- I have selected the field where I will not merely succeed but excel. Diagnostic radiology is my passion, and I will dedicate all of my effort and insights to it, achieving personal and professional satisfaction.
