For the past seven years, I have worked at Bio Nuclear Diagnostics Inc (BND), where I learned about the business aspects of medicine. My contribution to the development of new ideas for the improvement of existing medical products, such as the cervical brush used in pap smears, has taught me the importance of self-directed learning. I can now recognize areas in which my knowledge is incomplete and can actively seek out the necessary information by reading texts, analyzing existing models and consulting physicians and specialists. These techniques of self-directed learning will surely help me conquer the challenges of medical school and the medical profession.

Working at BND has also helped me become an effective team member. As part of the production team, I discovered the importance of sharing and accepting criticism. I understand how to deliver feedback without judging or discouraging others, and I use the advice of others to improve my own behavior. I have also developed sensitivity, respect for others and excellent communication skills. These qualities will help me work effectively in small groups in medical school and as part of a team with other physicians.

In addition to my work throughout the academic year, I have had a significant amount of clinical experience. As a clinical research student at the Ontario Cancer Institute and the Toronto Hospital with the Women's Health department, I cultivated my interpsersonal skills and gained insight into helping improve the quality of health of others. My responsibilities as a research student primarily included recruiting patients for the project, whose aim was to assess patients' views on their illness and treatment at the hospital. I discovered how to identify non-verbal cues, a skill which allowed me to better communicate with patients.

I took part in a second project which sought to design a survey for physicians in order to assess their treatment of cervical cancer in East Asian women. The small group atmosphere allowed me to once again strengthen my resourcefulness as I read to through a large amount of research material. Both projects provided me with the opportunity to cultivate my communication, critical thinking and team skills, all of which have helped me work effectively with co-workers and patients in the clinic.

Finally, as a physician's assistant at a family practice in rural Pickering, Ontario, I received even more clinical experience. Here my responsibilities included performing ECGs and pulmonary function tests, as well as taking some preliminary patient history. I strengthened my confidence in the clinic and learned the importance of professionalism in medicine. I continue to cultivate my communication and interpersonal skills and learn much about the personal sacrifices which physicians often make. My work at the family practice continues to teach me lessons in empathy -- an invaluable quality of caregivers.
